"Paths is something of an amalgam. Composed of three tracks each
hovering around the ten minute mark, it extends what would otherwise
be epic metal into the shimmering world of post-rock. From the typical
metal chugging at the beginning of “The Construct” to the grandiose
build-up at the end of “The Truth,” the instrumentals on this EP do
genuinely illustrate the diversity of the subgenre, diversity that is
often omitted or ignored. While the quiet-loud formula is in full
effect, it never seems forced, but rather evolves naturally out of
the band’s sound palette.
Mountains Became Machines have created a truly cinematic offering.
The guitar lines, whether Mastodon-like riffs or Explosions In The Sky-
like flutters, are always moving the tracks forward, rarely leaving a
dull moment. Something surprising to see from such a young band
(formed in 2006) is maturity; the songs are well composed and flow
convincingly from heavy to light and from evil to pretty.
The word epic comes to mind very often while listening, and justifiably so.
The long tracks often serve as much as stories as they do as songs.
The build-ups aren’t too long, as is sometimes the case with such bands,
and the transitions between quiet and loud are done gracefully. Clocking
in right around the thirty-minute mark, Paths is a solid EP and definitely
warrants a listen. "
