Anna Netrebko was born in Krasnodar, in the south of Russia in 1971. She received her vocal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where she appeared as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Violetta in La Traviata. In 1993 she was first-prize winner of the Glinka Vocal Competition in Moscow, and joined the Kirov Company at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, to which she still belongs. The following year she made her debut there as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro; some of her other important roles with the company include Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Amina in La sonnambula, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Micaëla in Carmen and Louisa in Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery. In 1995 she graduated from St. Petersburg Conservatory and made her sensational US debut as Lyudmila in Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila at the San Francisco Opera. Praised both for her beauty and glorious voice, Anna Netrebko is one of the world’s most stunning young sopranos who sweeps audiences off their feet wherever she appears.
Anna Netrebko's second CD is even more impressive than her first. She still may not be an absolutely polished, finished artist, but she's working at it and presents here a very satisfying program. She doesn't quite have the stature or insights for Verdi's Violetta yet, but aside from some smudged coloratura in low-lying passages she sings the first act scene quite well. She's close to ideal in the Sonnambula and Puritani excerpts, where her girlishness is entirely right, her coloratura dazzling, and her ability to sound tearful really impressive. The Lucia Mad Scene is quite wonderful, even if the runs are sometimes not as well-delineated as they should be. And although she's not vocally suited to Desdemona's Willow Song and Ave Maria, she does manage to darken her voice to fit the character and presents a very moving portrait. The CD ends with an utterly charming "O mio babbino caro." Artistry and everything else aside, her voice is just beautiful. Claudio Abbado's leadership is ideal.

Anna Netrebko / Rolando Villazón - DUETS

[Для просмотра данной ссылки нужно зарегистрироваться]

Where would opera be without its duets between soprano and tenor? Whether the duet is confrontational or tearful, joyously ecstatic or nakedly sexual, it is the intertwining of two high-flying voices that gives opera its emotional heart. As Rolando Villazón puts it: “When the opera shows you two young lovers on stage who are ready to die for each other, the audience has to feel their passion."It helps if vocal allure is matched by physical glamour, and in that respect the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko and the Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón are ideal. In The New York Times Anthony Tommasini described Netrebko as “gorgeous" and Villazón as “dashing", while Alex Ross of The New Yorker suggested that they are “two singers with a certain movie-star quality". In Opera Martin Bernheimer simply labelled them opera's “stardust twins".Netrebko and Villazón established themselves as the new operatic dream team when they sang in the Salzburg Festival production of Verdi's La Traviata in 2005 (their interpretations are preserved on Deutsche Grammophon CD and DVD). Since then, they have conquered the world's stages: in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette in Los Angeles, Verdi's Rigoletto at New York's Metropolitan Opera (conducted by Plácido Domingo, who knows a thing or two about vocal finesse), and in Massenet's Manon in Los Angeles last autumn (Domingo once again conducting). In Manon, according to the Berliner Morgenpost, “Netrebko's chemistry with Villazón generated cosmic sparks". (Nick Kimberley)

Anna Netrebko 2006 RUSSIAN ALBUM

[Для просмотра данной ссылки нужно зарегистрироваться]

This is a deeply personal recording, made in the opera house where she first found stardom, St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre, working with a conductor who has been her mentor and friend since he picked her for his opera company - Valery Gergiev. What a fantastic team to interpret the treasures of Russian opera for the world! Gergiev has often said he is happy to dedicate a large part of his life to doing just this, and Anna Netrebko is happy to be part of this mission.
Audiences can enjoy the fruits of their fantastic collaboration on this disc. Here is an aria from Anna's signature role, Natasha in Prokofiev's War and Peace, which launched her career in the West in 2002 with ecstatic reviews from critics. Gergiev says this role was made for her. "Even if she learns many more new parts, this will remain one of the chief roles in the life of Anna Netrebko. That's because this type of heroine perfectly fits her dramatic, vocal and musical possibilities. And she also corresponds ideally to the character's visual conception." Also included is Tatyana's heartrending Letter Scene from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Unlike many sopranos who tackle the role, Anna looks and sounds like the beautiful, passionate and naive young girl Tchaikovsky had in mind, although she hasn't yet sung Tatyana on stage. That is a treat still to come.
Anna Netrebko has waited many years to make this Russian Album, and is delighted with the end result. "It means so much to me to be able to record Russian music with this wonderful orchestra, and with Valery. And I'm really happy to have the honour of recording these wonderful soprano arias in my homeland. Some of them may not have been recorded for a very long time, and that also is a very great honour." OPERA ARIAS

[Для просмотра данной ссылки нужно зарегистрироваться]

It isn’t surprising that Netrebko has such a strong point of view, for her career has been marked by daring from the very beginning. Born in Krasnodar, in southern Russia, she was a 20-year-old student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory when the Kirov Opera’s Valery Gergiev discovered her – scrubbing floors in the Mariinsky Theater. That job allowed her to attend and absorb everything she could from the company’s rehearsals and performances. After a couple of years, she auditioned for Gergiev, singing the Queen of Night’s daredevil arias from Die Zauberflöte. To her astonishment, he accepted her on the spot.

Their first collaboration was Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila, first at the Kirov and then, crucially, at San Francisco Opera, where Netrebko enjoyed a success that surprised everyone – especially herself – since she was then only 23. Under the guidance of San Francisco Opera’s general director, Lotfi Mansouri, she stayed on as a member of its famous training academy, the Merola Program, in which she essayed a number of leading leggero roles.

Her successful Metropolitan Opera début came in 2002 as Natasha in Prokofiev’s War and Peace. Netrebko, however, does not consider herself a particularly persuasive champion of Russian opera. Her principal interest lies in the great French and Italian roles suited to her voice, and the selection of arias on this début solo recording – her first under a long-term exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon – provides a generous sampling of the types of parts she likes best. Included are two prime bel canto arias, Amina’s “Care compagne ... Come per me sereno” from Bellini’s La sonnambula and “Ancor non giunse! ... Regnava nel silenzio” from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. The exultation of Amina’s aria and the Gothic chill of Lucia’s provide a striking study in contrast. (Brian Kellow)
