Po' Girl is a Canadian group whose style derives from jazz, folk, and country with a tinge of punk attitude. The style of music they perform is called "urban roots." Once based in Vancouver they are now back in the Eastern cities of Toronto and Montreal. The group consists of Allison Russell (singer/multi-instrumentalist), Awna Teixeira (singer/multi-instrumentalist), Benny Sidelinger (multi-instrumentalist), Maggie Ellis (singer/multi-instrumentalist). Po' Girl's music has been compared with that of The Band, Hazel Dickens,Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant,Elizabeth Cotton and Norah Jones. It showcases melodies from instruments as diverse as banjo, clarinet, harmonica, dobro, accordion, gutbucket bass.
