Healing tranquility of Nizhny Novgorod region
02 December, 2009

fullstory:
RT travels to the Nizhny Novgorod region. The region has a great heritage and is on the UNESCO list of cities with cultural value. The area is known for its large number of churches, some of them built in medieval times.

The Serafimo-Diveevsky Monastery is considered one of the most important spiritual centers of Russia and hundreds of thousands of Orthodox Christians make a pilgrimage there every year.

They come to be blessed by St. Seraphim of Sarov, whose tomb lies inside the cathedral. One of the oldest and most respected Russian monks in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Seraphim is celebrated for his healing powers.

And that’s why Velimir Buljancevic made a journey further than most. Originally from Serbia, he was living in Sydney, Australia, when he had an accident which left him immobile and with heart problems. He is better now.

“When I came here I needed a stick to help me walk and now I am almost cured. I come here, pray and go to the nearby holy springs – so I was healed in Diveevo,” Buljancevic says.

People from far and wide come here and celebrate the monastery’s cultural and spiritual value. But another ancient building not too far away, is being largely ignored and left in ruins.

Even with a sturdy 4x4 and an expert rally driver at the wheel, you have to struggle though the uphill mud path leading to its entrance.

But it hasn’t put off one determined woman: while the local authorities have lost interest in the property, this is not the case for Zhanna Potravko, 39. She’s been living alone in this crumbling mansion for five years after falling in love with it on a visit

The estate dates back to the 16th Century, but years of neglect and looting have caused severe devastation – something Zhanna is fighting to prevent, and so is investing all her time and money to the cause. Well, at least her husband’s money.

Zhanna was living the high life in Odessa, Ukraine, before moving here. Her husband and son remain there, but Zhanna says she can’t go back.

“In the most difficult times, when I feel desperate, these walls hug and protect me. I feel safe here and so I won’t let it be destroyed,” Zhanna says.

Swapping riches for ruins, Zhanna plans to restore the ancient mansion to its former glory, even if it involves battles with the authorities who want her out.

Like the Serafimo-Diveevsky Monastery, Zhanna finds peace and spirituality here, and although it might not get as much attention, Zhanna hopes to attract more tourists and investment to ensure the mansion’s long history continues.
Russia’s money pocket

The city of Nizhny Novgorod is the region's capital and is the fourth largest city in Russia with a population of 1.3 million.

Speaking with RT’s Charlotte Lomas-Farley, tourist guide Angelina Kalinina recalled a saying about Nizhny Novgorod: “Moscow is the head of Russia, St. Petersburg is the heart of Russia, and Nizhny Novgorod is the money pocket of Russia.”

Ksenia Kemova, a teacher at Nizhny Novgorod Linguistic University also recalled the historical importance of her city.

“Being situated on two great Russian rivers: the Volga and the Oka, at some point it became a great commercial city, introducing the Great Russian Fair, which still plays a big role in our lives,” Kemova said.

Irina Porynina – a Nizhny Novgorod resident for twenty years – shared some details of her city’s foundation with RT.
“Initially the idea was to fortify the north-eastern borders of Vladimir-Suzdal principality. Along with the fortification, the first church was built. It remained intact even after the Soviet era,” Porynina said.

Living in a city built in the 13th Century, student Olga Ryabova, says history is very important to modern-day citizens of Nizhny Novgorod.
“For example, recently we celebrated a nationwide holiday – the Day of National Unity, which in terms of personalities was devoted to Prince Dmitry Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin [the men who raised the army that ejected the Poles in 1612], both of whom were born in Nizhny Novgorod,” she noted.

RT also spoke with Gleb Virshin, a knowledgeable Nizhny Novgorod resident, who shared more curious facts about the city's history. For example, among many famous Russians to have stayed in the city was Alexander Pushkin, considered by many to be Russia's greatest poet. Pushkin began writing Eugene Onegin – his famous novel in verse – in the Nizhny Novgorod region village of Boldino.

Preserving age-old handicraft at Matryoshka’s birthplace
03 December, 2009

fullstory:
Part of UNESCO’s world cultural heritage list, Nizhny Novgorod and its region are also the cradle of many ancient Russian handicrafts and traditions.

Alexander Vugin has been a master in wood carving for 14 years, ever since giving up his job as a photographer.

He picked up the trade without any training or specialist knowledge, and can now make chess sets, furniture and his trademark sculptures.

“To me working with wood is a pleasure, to feel it and see that it's alive. I don’t like adding too much paint or varnish – it should be natural to let it breathe,” Alexander says.

Demanding precise skill and a delicate touch, woodcarving is one of several ancient handicrafts to come out of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

But the number of specialists is diminishing and that is why people in the town of Gorodets, on the Volga River, are taking action to ensure their legacy isn't lost.

They have set up a new workshop, where visitors can learn about the various crafts iconic to the Russian region:

“People can come here to see the handcrafters at work. Those who get interested in their work have the opportunity to learn from them and in time become handcrafters themselves,” tour guide Irina Udalova explains.

The town of Gorodets is nearly a thousand years old and is known throughout Russia for its wood carving, pottery, gold lace embroidery, and its painting designs – skills that have been practiced in the region for generations.

For instance, the art of pottery making in Gorodets dates back to the 13th Century and is one of the many crafts the people here are trying to preserve.

Handicrafts are also a big business in the Nizhny Novgorod region – nearly a third of Russia’s embroidery, ornaments and boxes come from here.

And some of them don’t come cheap. A painted box might set you back $1000, though much like everywhere else, times have been tough recently and production is falling.

“In Soviet times we employed 160 workers, now there are only 30. But given what has happened in Russia over the years, and the way the economy has changed recently, I guess it’s normal. Demand for our goods has fallen in comparison with last year,” director of Gorodets Rospis factory Vyacheslav Grushlin says.

But with a drive to attract more interest in the region’s cherished handicrafts, people in Nizhny Novgorod are hoping the worst is now behind them. The important thing is that region is very proud of its handicraft heritage.

Speaking with RT, the consultant for support and development of small business at the Nizhny Novgorod council, Tamara Murygina, mentioned that the famous Matryoshka nesting dolls were created in her region.

“In essence, Matryoshka is a result of Semyonov painting – traditional craft of wood-toy painting,” she explained.

According to local resident Anna Moroskova, household appliances designed with Khokhloma wood painting handicraft are a common sight in Nizhny Novgorod homes.

“Everyone has at least a plate, spoon or vase designed with recognizable red, black, gold colors of Khokhloma,” Moroskova said.

A region of 1,000 inventions
04 December, 2009

fullstory:

In addition to a great historical and cultural heritage, the Nizhny Novgorod region is a key center for Russian industry, renowned for engineering and scientific innovation.

Mars 2000 is no normal boat. Able to move on water, land, snow and even ice, this dream machine would be fit for James Bond himself.

Inside, one can find all the usual features of a car, but it's made from the same material as a helicopter and moves on water like a boat – this invention from experts in Nizhny Novgorod is something special.

This hovercraft is able to take on all kinds of weather and all kinds of surfaces – all thanks to the ability to manually change the pressure of the balloon floats outside, meaning bumps, slopes and even mounds of snow pose no problem.

According to Sergey Italyantsev, director general of Aks shipbuilding company, the hovercraft is used for sea patrol, transportation around oil rigs and by coastal units – and not only in Russia.

“We’ve had sales in Finland, Norway, Africa and India – so geographically the demand is quite wide. What makes our hovercraft different is the skirt around the outside which provides more stability and an amphibian-like quality,” Italyantsev says.

And it is not reserved for governmental or commercial use – you too could buy one for a mere €50,000.

This is one example of many inventions originating from the Nizhny Novgorod region – a place renowned for its engineering and scientific innovation. Over the past five years, more than 1,000 inventions have been registered and patented here.

Among this number is a robot named Obereg – meaning savior in English.

Small and unassuming, this machine has three sensors, along with an infrared night camera, and can get around obstacles with ease, giving it a huge advantage when it comes to saving lives.

“The robot can search for humans trapped by avalanches, earthquakes and other emergency situations by detecting the electromagnetic signal given off by their watch or mobile phone. It doesn’t need any human help, and can pick up the signal through steel, cement, ice, mud etc,” inventor Alexey Budanin, who is also a student of radio technical college, says.

This signal is then sent to a computer to be analyzed.

The brainchild of science students in Nizhny Novgorod, Obereg's powers aren’t limited to finding people. Plans are underway to develop it to identify explosive devices and, it is hoped, could eventually be used in an attempt to prevent terrorist attacks.

The robot’s potential has sparked interest as far as in Scandinavia and India. So while Obereg might not look much to the untrained eye, this invention from Nizhny Novgorod could soon be saving lives across the world.

The IT sector is also gaining momentum in the region, as Professor Viktor Gergel, dean of the software department, University of Nizhny Novgorod testifies.

“About ten years ago, Intel established their department in Nizhny Novgorod. Ever since, the information technology plays a very important role in the life of Nizhny Novgorod, which is often referred to as ‘the IT capital of Russia’,” Gergel told RT.

Vladimir Bogdanov, head of Intel Corporation’s Nizhny Novgorod branch, shared the secret of why his company chose Nizhny Novgorod as its home in Russia.
“Well, briefly, it was mainly for money. A city well-known for its universities and science is not far from Moscow, but the labor costs are quite reasonable,” Bogdanov said, adding that his company “has plans to grow in Nizhny Novgorod in the nearest future.”
