The Dutch duo 16 Bit Lolitas is a well known progressive act. Warung Beach Club is a Brazilian venue which regularly hosts the biggest names from the whole dance scene. One of the most recognized places – of the still quite progressive South America – decided to promote its brand with an album created by the aforementioned duo. ‘Warung Beach 001‘ is supposed to reflect the club’s atmosphere, so let’s check what can be expected from a journey to a Brazilian beach.
DISC 1 is a master-class of poise and elegance, oozing with *cencored*, as upfront genre-blurring underground sounds, handpicked from across the globe shimmer and shine, creating the most exotic atmosphere, and capturing the essence and ambience of a night at Warung Beach. From the mind enveloping mellow sonic textures of Australia’s Lewie Day, to the deep melodic minimalist groove of Warbgasm, the stage is set with subtlety and charm. Martin Buttrich’s exceptional reworking of Sharam Jey’s “Don’t Lie” picks up the pace perfectly leading the listener up to the next plateau, where one of Toronto’s best kept secrets (Myers Briggs) sets the scene with his trademark emotional intensity, hypnotic funk, and the sublime synth-driven sound of “Red Cooler”.
When the spine-tingling voice of Jennifer Horne emerges through the mix on “Nobody Seems To Care”, it’s one of those instantly transported to the centre of the dancefloor moments, with 16 Bit Lolitas teasing the atmosphere ever upwards with their own production prowess. The pace continues to rise through the flawless selections and tech-edged groovadelic productions of 20:20 Vison’s Spirit Catcher (linking up superbly with the hot young Belgian producer Maxime Firket aka Compuphonic), and Edinburgh’s own emerging star, Stallos.
By the time Sumatra born NYC resident Astrid Suryanto graces the mix, as 16 Bit Lolita’s select the deeply infectious Gutterstylz remix ahead of their own version of “Distant Bar”, the temperature on the dancefloor is rising higher and higher with every impeccable DJ selection. As they turn up the pressure with Dave Robertson’s take on “The Music”, their own exclusive euphoric hands-in-the-air Warung remake of “Wave Controls”, and the deeply joyous pure sunshine music of “E-Love”, it becomes clear exactly why this Dutch duo are the hottest act at Warung. This is the DJ as an artist, a patient craftsman building the perfect set with emotion and care, selecting music that creates atmospheres as well as delivering well-timed killer blows without the need to resort to the overused and the obvious.
DISC 2 The wondrous electronic carnival has only just begun, as 16 Bit Lolitas now continue raise the temperature, and showcase an entire artist album’s worth of their own exclusive material in the mix. They often write material just for their own DJ sets, more than able to nail the mood required in the studio that translates perfectly in the club. Many DJs will play some of their own productions but not whole sets made up of their own music. Welcome to the second part of the 16 Bit Lolitas master-class, as they once more show exactly why they are the perfect production and DJ unit.
As the seductive feel-good mellow vibes of exotic opener “Sunrise At Warung” blend effortlessly into the brilliant bass heavy deep tranced-out attitude of “Karmageddon”, and as the *cencored* and groove factor are turned up with the gorgeous “4 to 12”, there can be no doubt that 16 Bit Lolitas are amongst the finest electronic producers in the world right now. Their unique skill is in their subtle energy building, as the mix soars, swoops and drops through their genre-blurring productions, capturing the beauty and blissed-out joy of a perfect party at the most perfect club in the world.
They are masters at work. Every track is a unique highlight in it’s own right. As the euphoric rush of “Cabardi Loca” rises and takes the mix to another level, and “More Horizons” adds more bounce and a pure hands in the air moment, it’s easy to see just why the 16 Bit Lolitas are perfect for Warung, and why global superstardom beckons. But they don’t stop there. The intensity of the mix rises once more through the twisted technoid sounds of “Starfish Prime”, the euphoric chords of “The Heartbreak Files”, and the deep throb of “5 to 12”, before dropping effortlessly into the double climactic finale that is “Murder Weapon” linking with “Ceres”.
