1984 Nirvana Road
During the Seventies and Eighties Deuter, after travelling extensively in Asia in search of spiritual and creative inspiration, settled for a long time in Pune, India, where under the name Chaitanya Hari he became a neo-sannyasin - a disciple of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, who later changed his name to Osho. With the aid of a multitrack tape-machine, living in the neo-sannyas ashram, he produced a series of music tapes to be used in "active meditations", consisting of several "stages" of ten or fifteen minutes each, which range between, and often merge, Indian classical motifs, fiery drums, loops, synthesizers, bells, musique concrete and pastoral acoustic passages.
These works, constructed to the master's instructions in consultation with a team of disciples testing the meditation methods, deserve recognition for their purely functional or objective origination as well as for their originality, power and beauty.
In Deuter’s own words, his music takes us to the beautiful place inside where the listener can experience warmth, the playfulness, the love, the compassion, the gentleness. That is the music I want to make for others. And that is just what he has done.
Cicada and Nirvana Road showcase Deuter's remarkable ability to produce music that is more and more danceful, lighter, happier and more playful, full of heart and still have in it somewhere a vision of silence.
Nirvana Road is a great middle-period Deuter album, being released in the early 80s after his "space music" 70s albums that had more in common with German bands like Popol Vuh. This album fully displays the influence of his spiritual journeys in India, and is ideal for meditation or relaxation. Deuter plays all the instruments except harp and tabla.
