Brubeck - Hanna - Hyman
1994 JAZZ SONATAS
Dave Brubeck, Sir Roland Hanna, and Dick Hyman, three legendary jazz pianists and composers, show their passion for composition and performance in this pioneering release with each piece uniquely fusing the worlds of classical and jazz in a way not previously heard.
The idea was... What if we ask some of the great living exponents of Jazz (who are also composers) to write music with a classical bent and then record the work with small ensembles.
The emergence of Brubeck, Hanna and Hyman for this album was the result of our search for Jazz composers who are also outsatanding instrumentalists. Being that a Jazz musician is by definition "an Improviser" as were the great classical composers Bach, Mozart, and Liszt..we felt very comfortable in combining this improvisational talent with a classical approach in a chamber setting.
So, here it is! An album of new music, some recently written for the ocassion, some already performed but never before recorded. We hope you enjoy this artistry, the composing talent of three of American Jazz giants. (Ettore Stratta & Pat Philips, 1994)
