Whereas fellow electronic music lovers would laugh at you when you dared claiming that you dig old disco, the good ol' funk has found its way back to house music over the past few years in a reshaped form. Whether you like to call it new wave disco, space disco, cosmic disco, next gen-disco, nu-disco, future disco, glam house or your own made up classification, fact is that the thick vintage bass-lines, wah wah guitars and 70's percussion are back and fierce ruling floors worldwide. Azuli has noticed this trend and now presents 16 futuristic disco cuts on a enjoyable compilation cleverly titled... Future Disco, compiled and mixed by Sean Brosnan.
There are two things that make this compilation an extraordinary release. First of all, it's a completely different kettle of fish that musically distinguishes itself from most comps around at the moment and secondly, this mix excludes the cheese in today's hipster disco. We've all just had about enough of Todd Terje Lindstrom and Prins Thomas for the moment haven't we?. The disc immediately introduces the funk on the very first tune with the sunny and very danceable Secretsunday (Greg Wilson edit) by Ignition. From that point on, the compilation goes on to showcase the many different facets of the new disco sound, switching from solid houseness to deep dub funk and spacey jams along the tour. Guided by sexy saxophones, deep melodic bass and typical disco rhythm structures, we encounter disco delight in the form of the mid-tempo Defected-styled The Feeling by Toby Tobias and Friendly Fires' super-hot vocal glam jam Paris (gently reworked by Aero Planes), after which the tempo is increased on Rock The Joint (Reverso 68 remix) by Wild Rumpus feat. Beardyman.
And it doesn't stop there! Although many tunes might balance on the fine line between house and cheesy gimmick, each and every one of them does represent that disco vibe in a credible 2009 upgrade. Highlights? Rock The Joint rocks indeed, while Franz Ferdinand's (!) Ulysses (Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve Re-animation, although not nu-disco per se but a more Kissy Sell Out-esque rocker) and Motorcycle Boy's Motorcycle Theme (Fabrizio Mammarella Edit, watch out for that eeeevil bass-line!) will also make you uncontrollably nod your head.
Future Disco is a solid overview of the nu-disco sound that has been hitting clubs worldwide as of late. Pretty much all the original elements are there, mixed with 21st century beats and thereby presenting the best of both worlds. This compilation simply incorporates 16 serious club rockers in a mix that tends to lean towards queasy glam jamming at some points, but stays on the good side of the road at all times. An irresistible mix well worth your money!
