Marcie presents Behind The Lyric

About:

Marcie's 'Behind The Lyric' episodes have created a whiz mid air. The unique concept now has a firm presence in the bandwidth world. Highlighting aspects of Vocal Trance and electronic dance music, the show features vocal greats and producers whom we listen to in our day-to-day life.

Trance is a genre dominated by riffs, beats and synths. Vocals form a reminisced space in everyone's heart and are interpreted differently by different listeners. Knowing the aspirations behind those mighty, sensuous and trippy vocals can really give an insight of the lives singers live and the way they envision things around them. 'Behind The Lyric' comes across as a very intimate listening experience. Adorned with dreamy voices of vocalists, you can hear them husking and whispering their deep sentiments. The journey feels like a one-way communication, where one loves to listen, get inspired, unfold the lyrical enigma and gratify inner curiosities. Though it is a talk show, you are also taken on a musical sojourn when the vocal melodies are played in between to create the perfect listening experience.

The radio show is broadcast on DI.fm (Digitally Imported), ETN.fm and a couple of other major online radio stations magnetizing up to 6,000 listeners worldwide. Some popular features on BTL: JES, Tiff Lacey, Anita Kelsey, Jaren, Aruna, Julie Thompson, Colleen Kelly and a lot more!

Marcie says, "The spoken words of Songwriters and Vocalists sharing their stories are mixed on top of their tracks, and the listener can journey intimately along with the Artists and their music. You can hear 'Behind The Lyric' on my website as well as on various EDM stations. Future episodes are in progress, and will feature incredible Artists with more riveting looks behind the lyric."

Marcie presents Behind The Lyric Episode 001 4th July, 2007:

Marcie explains how "Blanket Of White" is a non-traditional song of seduction with a storyline full of cathartic healing imagery. She discusses her track "Butterfly Garden" and the exhaustive process of writing the minimal lyric, its inspiration, and its symbolism. The episode closes with "So Tired" where Marcie confesses the difficulty she has faced in removing herself from unhealthy and draining living situations. She speaks of how she likes to sing about decisions that have an element of risk involved.

Suzy Solar reveals the personal pain, and strong multi-generational family bond that drove her emotional vocal scat in "Samurai". Here, her non-lyrical vocalizations have more meaning than any specific words could have conveyed for her.

Liz Cirelli speaks of her spiritual development, and how her song, "Sweetest Dreams", was once about love between herself and a lover, but now feels to her to be about a spiritual love on a higher plane. She mentions singing of a utopia. Later she talks of the mechanics of the lyric writing for "One Temptation", and her struggle to find the right words and rhymes to fit her melody and convey her idea.

Colleen Riley tells us that she does much of her writing while she drives in her car. Her intent with "Downtime" was to sing about the quick passage of time, in the hopes that listeners will slow down and appreciate the moment before it slips away forever. She wanted her lyrics to provide a break for the listener, and alter their perception of time.

Shelley Harland speaks of her recognition that her tune "In The Dark" has meant different things to many different listeners. She hints at the powerful emotions she felt when she wrote the lyrics, but refrains from imposing a strong interpretation on them. She enjoys that listeners bring their own story to her words, recognizing a universality in emotions that are often so private and unspoken.

Marcie discusses writing as self-healing. She mentions how the passion and uncertainty surrounding an impulsive hook-up inspired her lyrics for "Know You". Her tune "Next To Me" speaks of secrets and fantasies while being cryptically confessional at the same time.

Aruna speaks of writing "Waiting Here For You" on a deadline, her approach to melody and rhyme scheme, and her tips for aspiring writers seeking to better access their creativity.

Anita Kelsey reveals the surprising background stories for two of her most popular releases, "Travelling Light", and "First Time". She also touches on the intended meaning behind a seemingly controversial line.

Colleen Kelly speaks of writing "Remember Me" to capture the feeling of longing lovers have when they hope to be remembered across time and distance.

Dhany speaks of the risks we take when our hearts and minds disagree. She tells of how her own broken heart inspired the powerful stance she takes in "Hit My Heart", and her desire to celebrate strong women who command respect from men.

Marcie presents Behind The Lyric

Marcie presents Behind The Lyric Episode 003 11th January, 2008:

Episode 3 brings to you a dazzling line up of vocalists discussing what inspired the lyrics that procured into melodic formations. The highlights of the third episode appear bright with Marcie herself, Tiff Lacey,Jaren, D:Folt and Rank 1's vocalist Penny Nixon. This episode also initiates a new feature where DJs will reveal why they pick their Vocal Trancers to play in their sets. Episode 3 features DJ Steve Anderson, and Marcie plans to add this feature occasionally in the coming episodes. 'Letters from Lyric Lovers' is a new feature on this radio show where people can write emails to Marcie and she will read them on air.

Here is a sneak peek of what you can hear in this episode:

Marcie explains that "When Stars Align" asks questions of destiny. She then speaks of the trippy location she created in "Deep In Me", and how self-perception can be deceiving.
Tiff Lacey reveals that "Wonderland" is a song referencing Alice in Wonderland, and exploring the dark side of losing control to forces bigger than oneself.

D:Folt explains that "Get There" is about learning from life's experiences in order to get where you want to be and have a life free from restraint. He speaks of sticking with friends and family through good and bad.

aren discusses how she crossed over from her Country / Folk roots to begin writing Electronica with Cerf and Mitiska. For "Me And You", she speaks of her joy in exploring subject matter in electronica that would be inappropriate in Country music. She tells of the double edged lyric in "Light The Skies", and shares how "Saved Again" was written when she learned to live in the moment.

Rank 1 vocalist Penny Nixon speaks of her active dream world, and how music expresses a range of emotions that she is unable to put into spoken words.

Marcie premiers the original version of "Stay With Me". The Genix Mix of this tune was slammed by Armin on his radio show - A State Of Trance. It's elusive vocal samples intrigued thousands, and now curious ears can hear the story behind the full vocal! She also tells how change and heartache inspired the break up love song, "So Far Away".

Morgan Page and Lissie tag team their story of making "The Longest Road". Spontaneity, free association, spirituality, and improvisation are at the root of their chart topping collaboration.
Shena tells of the orgasmic energy driving her tune "Electrosexual".

Seth Hutton speaks of writing "Invisible" for Kirsty Hawkshaw. What started out as a tune about himself became one that took him out of himself and asks how someone he loves could be neglected by the world. He explains that resisting change is futile, and healing can always be found somewhere.

Zara Taylor speaks of how an epiphany about unconditional love drove the quick write of "Be With U".

Marcie premiers the original version of "Exhale", the first track off her upcoming album with D:Folt. The tune speaks of support systems that exist to catch us when we fall. Later Marcie reveals the cheeky tale behind the provocative lyrics of "Sinners Kitchen".

The esteemed Jes Brieden needs little introduction! Jes makes her debut on Behind The Lyric with the story behind THREE of her biggest hits! She discusses the inspiration and collaborative magic behind "As The Rush Comes", "Heaven", and "Like A Waterfall".

Shelley Harland describes writing tunes from others perspectives, how song writing has helped her cope with the pain of her father's death, and the bonds formed through her long distance musical collaborations.

The first DJ SPOTLIGHT is on Spinnin and Blackhole Producer & DJ extraordinaire, Sied van Riel. Sied reveals why Trebbiano's "Mulberry Harbour" is often included in his sets. He speaks of how he builds his sets to take the crowd on a trip, and how he balances travel and his home life.

Tiff Lacey describes the indie feel of "Labyrinth". She wrote the title first, and was inspired by the edgy guitars to maintain a dark vibe throughout the vocals.

Michelle Richer talks about the car accident that inspired her new track, "The Road". She speaks of appreciating the chances life gives us, and the loved ones that keep us going.

Marcie speaks of the dream state imagery at the root of "Red Forest", a story of an entanglement of emotions. Writing "Please Forgive" was a way to free herself from forces that imprison. It is also a plea for people to help one another.

J. Scott G. of Deepsky chronicles his musical evolution since retiring from Deepsky. "Thousand Miles" is about figuring out who one is through tribulations. Marcie presents Behind The Lyric Episode 008 25th september, 2008:

Marcie opens the show with "Ocean Wave". She says that sometimes our most blissful moments are also our most dangerous. Passion leaves us vulnerable to an uncertain future, but living in the moment makes pleasure last as long as possible. Later, she tells how "Hold Me Up" was written as a song of gratitude for someone who showed her unconditional love.

Jes Brieden tells the story behind her hit "Around You". A song dedicated to the unrequited love she felt for a man who had many admirers. She describes the life story that inspired the picture painted by the lyrics, and shares the joy she feels when her fans sing along with her.

Tara McDonald talks about her songwriting process, and how it has varied across genres. "Perfect Moment" is a different kind of vocal for her than earlier hits like "Delirious". No matter what, she works with a melody before lyrics, and then moves forward to think of songs as a story.

Melleefresh talks about her collaboration with Deadmau5 on "Hey Baby", and the late night inspiration for her dirty, sexy electro house lyrics. She talks about how much fun it is to take her tunes in front of a live audience.

Jenry R. speaks of "Face The Truth". He says the track gives a message of self-acceptance, and the importance of facing our reality.

Anna Basel describes how witnessing another culture made her realize how fortunate she is in her life. The song, "Two Worlds" is about the differences between her fast paced life, and the lives of those who do not have access to the same modern resources as herself.

Inger Hansen focuses on his collaboration with DJ Shah for "Don't Wake Me Up". He speaks of how everyone has times when they would prefer to stay in a dreamworld. Inger says that when he writes he tries to put his own take on common feelings.

Aneym speaks of her collaboration with Ronski Speed on "Manic Star". The track is about love that holds no boundaries. The lyrics have changed in meaning for her since she wrote them. Initially about no one in particular, they are now dedicated to someone special in her life.

Here is a glimpse into what you will hear in Episode Nine:

Marcie describes how an imbalanced relationship inspired the lyric for "I Come Running". She says she wrote the tune when she was vulnerably waiting for someone to return her love. TyDi speaks about what he brought to the remix to make it a club banger. Marcie also explains that she wrote "Come Back To Me" to acknowledge her acceptance that someone was not going to be there for her in the way she had hoped.

TyDi is the focus of the episodes Producer Spotlight, giving insight into his production style, and inspirations behind "Russia", and "Closer Than My Breath". He stresses the importance of staying true to oneself, and relays some funny tales from his travels.

Julie Thompson confesses how "These Shoulders" was written to alleviate the pressure she felt when her friends were relying on her to be a vessel for their pain. In order to be there for them, she had to release her own emotions somehow, and this song allowed her to do that. She later reveals that the lyric for her first song with Tiësto, "Do You Feel Me" was written from the perspective of a ghost peering down at her loved one.

Janice Kephart talks about the dance mix of her trip poetry tune, "Rain Dance". Originally a performance poetry piece, it has been put to music by Deepsky's, J. Scott G. The lyric is based on a theme where physical elements of the universe are assigned a physical sense. It speaks of a baptism toward faith.

Zara Taylor opens up and tells of the self-betrayal that led her to write "Lost". She says that without our integrity, no matter where we are in the world, we would be lost.

Chris Jones says that "Going Wrong" is a song that flowed out of him during a time of heartbreak. He wrote it to be a lyric that everyone could relate to, and its massive success has given fulfilled his dream to have a crowd sing his lyrics back to him at a live show.

Here is a glimpse into what you will hear in Episode Ten:

Carla Werner tells the story behind one of Oakenfold's biggest hits, "Southern Sun". The vocal is about unrequited love, and being fragmented after love. Carla talks about the experience she had collaborating with Oakenfold on this now, Vocal Trance classic.

Marcie says "No One" was written partly about a friend whose heartbreak was obvious to her. The lyrics are about how we throw ourselves into love and wear our heart on our sleeves. We don't know how painful the end can be, and sometimes end up with our hearts left hanging and exposed.

Danny says the message in "Stranger" is that it's okay to have fun sharing the emotion of being in love. Love is a rush of adrenalin, and it's a great feeling to share one's happiness through a song.

Sylvia Tosun describes the five elements of the universe that inspired "Five Reasons". The lyrics speak of earth, air, fire, water and spirit and the song is a magical incantation about how life and love returns. "Underlying Feeling" was written to be a new definition of 'Love'. She sings about love as a whole underlying feeling of oneness.

Shelley Harland reveals that "Love Chemical" is about being a slave to love, and the powerless feeling that love can give someone. "Helpless" is one of the first tracks she has recorded that she did not write the vocals for, and she discusses how she approached the performance.

Betsie Larkin says the inspiration of "Made Of Love" comes from her studies of nature versus nurture, and her belief that deep down everyone has goodness inside. Coming from a singer / songwriter background, she applied a tune previously written for acoustic guitar to the EDM world.

The producer spotlight is on DJ Magik. He speaks about the dreams and emotions he and his partner bring to "Key Of Paradise" through orchestral sounds, classical instruments, and magical effects.

Steve Anderson reveals the identity behind 'Neve', the title of his tune. "Neve" is a song written in dedication to his niece of the same name, and is a gift to her as part of his promise to always look out for her.

Here is a glimpse into what you will hear in Episode Eleven:

ClAud9 tells the story behind the hit, "Cygnes", a track that has been a source of much curiousity. The part human, part computer sounding vocal was inspired by the Swan Lake Ballet.

Marcie says "Forward Motion" was written as a concept piece to explore the meaning behind a reverse vocal in electronica. It became a lyric that emphasizes the importance of making the most of our time, and moving forward without regret. "This Is Me" is an uplifting tune with a vocal that came from an angry, exhausted place. Marcie speaks of the pressure and frustration that inspired the aggressive metaphors in the lyrics. The lyrics are also about those in society who are victims of the power trips of others.

Molly Bancroft speaks of "Not Alone". The music made her feel melancholic, but the lyric is hopeful, and from the viewpoint of someone who is desiring another. "Fountains Of Youth" was a song that Molly wrote in one night, while walking along the coast of Lake Michigan. The lyrics reflect her feeling that we are all one with nature.

The Producer Spotlight for the episode focuses on Alex Kenji. He describes the #1 Beatport charting Latino tech house track, "A Lot Of". Kenji talks of the editing process, the percussive and brass elements, and the happiness in his life that inspired the track.

Former X-Factor finalist, Rowetta, speaks of her #1 Beatport hit, "Reach Out". The vocal was written to be a strong and well recognized hook. It has been sampled many times over the years, most recently by Mobin Master.

Jennifer Carbonell reveals that "Broken Pieces" is about recognizing when a relationship is good, and not mentally twisting a situation to the point where doubt takes over and ruins the possibility of true love.

Sue Cho says the inspiration for "Everything I" came at a time when she felt doubtful of her own abilities. She realized that her bitterness and discouragement was inhibiting her own creative flow. Writing the song helped her realize that her efforts would pay off in the end.

Here is a glimpse into what you will hear in Episode Twelve:

Marcie tells the emotional story behind the Armada release, "Broken Wings". Inspired by a sighting of a fragile baby bird on the sidewalk, Marcie created a metaphor of the bird as a metaphor for the risk we take when we fall in love. We all struggle to fly, and we often get hurt in the process. Tiny voices can cry out with a big heartache.

Matt Darey spoke with Marcie live at Winter Music Conference in Miami. He gave a behind the scenes peek into the making of the video for his controversial rocktronica track, "Animal". He explains how the imagery in the video suits the lyrics.

Roger Shah met up with Marcie at his first Winter Music Conference. He was there for his nomination for an IDMA. He spoke about making "Who WIll Find Me", and how he incorporates all the various vocalists into his productions. He often chooses from various ideas of his own, and those he receives from the singers. He outlines his intense production and touring schedule, and explains how he manages to write on the road.

Marcie also speaks of writing "Love Me & Leave Me", when she felt she couldn't handle love with conditions. The mixed messages she felt she was getting from her relationship were causing her to lose her sense of self. She questions how people can be simultaneously intimate and hurtfully secretive with each other.

Cat Martin says that "Love Always Fades" is about how love can make us blind. She says sometimes we stay with a lover everyone who cares about us warns us about. We do this because we think that our lover is the only one who truly sees us. This tunnel vision can be harmful in the long run.

The much requested Nadia Ali speaks of "Rapture" and "Who Is Watching". "Rapture" was about a romance that began in a night club. Nadia feels her writing is genuinely motivated by matters of the heart. Her track with Armin van Buuren, "Who Is Watching", is about being involved with someone who took their success for granted, and allowed it to change them. People who constantly want something bigger and better can find themselves alone.

Terri B. wrote "Can't Slow Down" about her transitioning herself from featured artist to the forefront. She speaks about real life emotions in her dance songs. Terri B. has been asked to change lyrics in a track, and says she will not sacrifice her thoughts and talents for those who aren't sure what they are doing.

Lisa Shaw speaks about writing happy themed songs that aren't cheesy. "Music In You" is off her brand new album. She speaks about the challenge of running her own record label, and how the extra work is worth it for the freedom it entails.

Christian Scott describes how his deep tech track, "The Circus", is representative of the environment he works at in Madison Square Garden. He is inspired by hearing other music, and finds himself in the studio creating every day.
