David Sylvian & Robert Fripp - 1994 Damage



This is a live recording of the collaboration between Robert Fripp, lead guitar and songwriter from King Crimson, and David Sylvian, lead singer of the band Japan. It was released a year after they recorded “The First Day” in 1993. This live unit is a tight, well-practiced squad as capable of burning through the rockers from “The First Day” as they are of lounging their way through the slow, moody atmospherics of various songs taken from Sylvian's solo albums. While the live readings of songs from “The First Day” are nice, the real treat of this album is getting to hear Fripp, Gunn, and Mastelotto add their unique touches to Sylvian's songs. Gunn's stick work in particular is hypnotic — the way he holds the low end down on "Riverman" combined with Fripp's distant, lonely interjections of guitar noodling gives Sylvian's already powerful vocals an extra emotional punch. There are a few songs here that don't appear on any other Sylvian albums, as well, most notably the minimalistic opening and closing tracks. These are two absolutely beautiful songs, with Sylvian's trademark wistful lyrics backed by quiet piano or synth and very subtle, tasteful contributions from Fripp and occasionally Gunn. An excellent album you shouldn't miss.
