For Tolstoy, love meant preferring others to oneself. That notion also sheds light on Bach, another of those who, in the deepest sense, entrusted their heart to love. He loved so fully, with all his being, in the most carnal, indeed incarnate way, that his self-effacement has caused us forever to perceive in that something resembling a revelation of life, something that explains his universality: it is as though Bach’s music were the awareness of music itself, its assurance and its promise. Perhaps no one –Shakespeare excepted – was comparably able to transform every atom in the universe, every particle of the world into such profound yet also intimate emotion. Bach is the composer who unites, in their truest sense, the plenary tenderness of prayer with the solitary echo of the divine. He grasps space and makes it an infinite curve; he takes time and makes it a possibility of the future; he seizes a dance and it becomes a betrothal to celebrate. For those of us who see so dimly, he restores a vision: the belief that with Bach there is no limit, that he enjoins us to rediscover that to the full, in this practice of love that has an obligation to the living to expand their lives, to restore love to the epicenter of their hearts.
There is no longer any dispute over the urgency of our situation today. But one would be mistaken in regarding Bach as no more than a man of his time bearing witness to ours – because Bach is always in the process of becoming. Even in his own lifetime, he eluded his contemporaries who saw in him a relic of the past, not a prophet for all times and all people. What could then be more natural than to find him at the source of Liszt, Busoni or Rachmaninov? Bach was such an island in the middle of the river, free and unwavering in the midst of the currents and counter-currents, fed from the shore of the source and carried to the shore of hope. Between these two markers is a symbolic path which is the signature of all existence. Bach was not at all torn: he knew how to build bridges. He is always showing us, in a flash of transparent clarity, how to reconcile the pain in our days with the burst of light. (Hélène Grimaud)

2003 David Russell plays Bach



David Russell is considered one of the best classical guitarists in the world. This high ranking makes David Russell Plays Bach an extraordinary listening experience. In this recital, Russell translates some of Bach’s finest music for lute, violin and keyboard into the compelling sonic world of the guitar.

The Partita No. 2 was arranged by Russell from the D Minor Partita for Solo Violin, one of the three partitas for unaccompanied violin that Bach wrote around 1720, while he was director of music at the court of Anhalt-Cothen, north of Leipzig. It follows the customary order of dance movements for the baroque suite: Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue—all of which serve as a preface to the wondrous closing Chaconne, one of Bach’s most sublime compositions.

The Lute Suite No. 4, Bach’s transcription of the E minor Partita for Solo Violin, opens with a brilliant Preludio, and is followed by a series of dances in bright tempos. Immediately following the suite is the finale, a 1641 chorale melody by Johann Schop, with a text by Johann Rist—a widely recognized piece that has come to be known as Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.

In recognition of Russell’s great talent, the Royal Academy of Music in London named him a Fellow in 1997.

“David Russell is a great guitarist, and this CD handsomely showcases his affinity for Bach. Without leaning toward Romanticism, Russell gets to the emotional content of the pieces, lingering nicely, for example, on the warmth of the lengthy Chaconne from the Partita No. 2. It would be easy to get bored with the sound of a solo guitar after an hour, but Russell won't permit it--sometimes his tone glistens, sometimes it caresses, always it keeps our attention. The opening prelude to the Lute Suite is a fast, bright movement, and while some will prefer it in Bach's own reuse as the opening of his Cantata No. 29, complete with trumpets and drums, this delicately filigreed version allows us to hear every note. And the mellow chorale prelude, "Jesu, joy of man's desiring," which closes the CD, has rarely sounded more beautiful.” -Robert Levine

Mstislav Rostropovich - 1995 J.S Bach Cello-Suiten



Mstislav Rostropovich is one of the few musicians who can create a larger-than-life experience through the combined forces of exceptional music, a beautiful instrument, and uncommonly facile communicative skills. In his performances of Bach's transcendent masterpieces for solo cello, Rostropovich finds a perfect balance between a romantic, rhapsodic interpretation. It was not until 1991, when he was 63, that he decided to record all six of the Bach Suites, a set he considered the crowning glory of the instrument's literature. It was a project over which he maintained complete control. He chose the site, the Basilique Sainte-Madeleine, in the Burgundian village of Vezelay, France, because he considered the church's acoustics perfect and the simplicity of its architecture inspiring. He produced and edited the recordings himself and paid for the sessions so that if he were dissatisfied, he would be free to destroy the tapes. As it turned out, he was pleased with the results, which were released in 1995. The album’s cover was made by Salvador Dalí, and as Rostropovich described it: “it is fascinating, for the curves resemble sound waves as if an enormous vibrato surrounded me completely”.

Lara St. John - 2003 re:Bach



Violinist Lara St. John is one of classical music's most adventurous performers, so it can come as no surprise that she has chosen to take the music of Johannn Sebastian Bach in a bold new direction for this recording. Collaborating with the imaginative composer/producer Magnus Fiennes, she realizes a fresh, contemporary interpretation of Bach's music, through soundscapes that draw on the influences of world music, jazz and pop.

Ask musicians of any kind about the music of Bach and invariably one gets the same response - wonder and awe. Created in the 18th century, his works marked the pinnacle of Baroque music. Today his music endures and flourishes as something greater and very much alive, like elements of nature itself: essential, pure, vast, fertile, timeless, beyond mere brilliance or beauty.

To my very personal taste, I don't really like when classical compositions are re-arranged into this peculiar world music, jazz and pop sounds,and most of all I don't like the fact that Bach's melodies can barely be heard in the songs. However there are other cases I do like where electronic sounds accompany the original melodies, such as Die Form's The Bach Project, and they are not cut in parts to include the other arrangements. But I rather prefer them as beautiful as they are without electronic and danceable arrangements. Still, this was a request by my father from Music is the Key blog, so here it is.

Lara St. John - 2001 BACH The Concerto Album



Lara St John does not play a Baroque violin but is clearly aware of current trends in period instrument performance practice. She has a sleek and silvery one, favours fleet tempos, and applies vibrato judiciously. The effect in these Bach concertos is reminiscent of Kennedy’s recording with the Berlin Philharmonic yet considerably more stylish and satisfying. Even if the New York Bach Ensemble cannot match Berlin’s plush string sound, the New Yorkers evoke the unique character of each work, making a clear distinction, for example, between the thick textures of the A minor Concerto and the airier quality of its E major counterpart.
As for St John, she makes the most ordinary passages come to life. Listen to the brief, ascending sequence beginning at 2’ 27” in the first movement of the A minor Concerto, which she grips so tightly, the pressure can be felt in one’s chest. She can be charming as well as intense. Her playing of the E major Concerto’s finale, for example, is joyous and balletic - a far cry from Kennedy’s jagged account. Ballet also comes to mind in the opening movement of the Double Concerto, as St John and her brother Scott bound through the intricately entwined solo parts like dancers leaping in and out of each other’s arms. The sublime Largo is transformed into a lilting Siciliano - open-hearted and ecstatic rather than hushed and reverential.
Filling out the disc, St John gives a provocative performance of the G minor solo Sonata. Some listeners may be taken aback by the expressive edginess she brings to the opening Adagio, or by by the slashing chords in the fugue, but it is difficult to argue with such a technically dazzling and unfailingly musical interpretation. The Scholars Baroque Ensemble was founded in 1987 by David Van Asch to complement the work of the existing a capella vocal ensemble "The Scholars". Since then, they have received attention in their collaborative effort with Naxos on a number of recordings, including Bach's St. John's Passion and Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers; all of which are performed with original or copies of such instruments. Additionally, members of this group are all Baroque specialists. The Scholars Baroque Ensemble performs music without a director. This is interesting.
