Karlheinz Stockhausen TIERKREIS / OBERLIPPENTANZ



TIERKREIS appeared originally in 1975 as "12 Melodies for the Signs of the Zodiac" for 12 musical-boxes, as part of the composition MUSIK IM BAUCH for 6 Percusion-Instruments and Musical Boxes and has also been printed as a score in its own right as TIERKREIS for One Melody Instrument with Accompanying Harmony Instrument or One Harmony Instrument, aditionally in 5 different editions for Voice and Accompanying Harmony Instrument as well as a Version for Chamber Orchestra (1977) and a version for Clarinet and Piano (1981).
It is clear from this that TIERKREIS is a cycle of musical formulae for the 12 months of the year and the 12 astrological character types, and that these formulae allow for innumerable versions. The longest version of TIERKREIS so far is my composition SIRIUS, Electronic Music and Trumpet, Soprano, Bass Clarinet, Bass (1975-77).
Yet another version came into being in 1984 during rehearsals with Markus Stockhausen (trumpet and pianoforte), Suzanne Stephens (clarinet) andKathinka Pasveer (flute and piccolo). This version has not yet been published.
The TIERKREIS-Version commences with PISCES and continues with ARIES, TAURUS, GEMINI, CANCER, LEO, VIRGO, LIBRA, SCORPIO, SAGITTARIUS, CAPRICORN, AQUARIUS, and concludes with PISCES. May each listener find a representation of himself in his own musical astrological sign! (Stockhausen, 1986)
