Alphaville

Alphaville is a German synthpop group which gained popularity in the 1980s. The founding members were Marian Gold (real name Hartwig Schierbaum, born May 26, 1954 in Herford), Bernhard Lloyd (real name Bernhard Gößling, born June 6, 1960 in Enger, North Rhine-Westphalia), and Frank Mertens (real name Frank Sorgatz, born October 26, 1961 in Enger, North Rhine-Westphalia). The band was at first named Forever Young before changing to Alphaville. They are best known for their two biggest hits, "Big in Japan" and "Forever Young".

Forever Young was the debut album released by West German synthpop/rock group Alphaville on September 27, 1984, by Warner Music Group. The album is Alphaville's most critically-acclaimed album, and an estimate 2,000,000 copies have been sold. The song, Forever Young, was not initially a popular hit with music listeners[citation needed], but has since become a standard pop song of the 1980s. The band would then slightly drop the synthpop sound and use more guitars in their next album, Afternoon In Utopia.

The Breathtaking Blue is an album released by the German band Alphaville in 1989. A companion video, Songlines was released in 1990. Unfortunately, the experimental jazz feeling of the album has effected the band's reputation and The Breathtaking Blue is regarded as the band's weakest album. The band would experiment even more on their next album, Prostitute. The Compact Disc release of this album was one of the first commercial CD+G format discs.

After a worldwide success in the 1980s (Forever Young, Big In Japan, Dance With Me), many had written the German electro/synth-band Alphaville off when nothing was heard from Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd and Ricky Echolette for five years. However, in 1994 they came back with what several musicians and critics believe to be their best album - and one of the best of the 1990s. While it did not do well mainstream, it became a fan-favorite despite having any notable song. Prostitute is a 16-track surprise fusing electronic jazz, new wave music, synthpop, swing music, hip hop, classical ballads and Pink Floyd-like epic electronic music. The ambitious project works, and apart from very few commercial (e.g. the second single "Impossible Dream") or mismatched (e.g. the "Some People") exceptions, every track on the album stands out with a unique style, sophisticated composition, clever lyrics and Gold's exceptional voice. However, the album's experimental nature made it a bit hard to access which prevented it from being a commercial success - and led the band to going back to its synth/dance roots with the following album, Salvation.

Salvation is an album by Alphaville, released in 1997 in Europe, and - with different artwork and three bonus tracks - in the U.S. in 1999.



The German synthpop-pioneers' last album with a major label. Salvation hit the stores in 1997 and marked a tumultuous time for the band: Ricky Echolette had left Alphaville during the production and Marian Gold and Bernd Lloyd were in a constant struggle with their record label which resulted in virtually no promotion for this album, and the subsequent split that led Alphaville to establishing their own, concert- and online-focused communication, promotion, and distribution platform.

Even though the circumstances for Salvation were not favorable, the album became quite a success - the first one for Alphaville since their 1986 release Afternoons in Utopia. This is mainly due to the band returning to their synthpop-roots and heavily infusing them with dance/techno. A departure from the experimental predecessors, Prostitute and The Breathtaking Blue, the straighter, simpler style appealed to old fans and a younger audience alike.

Musically, there is nothing new to be found - mostly well-engineered and -performed synthpop-ballads and dance/techno tunes, lyrically appealing but not stunning. Two songs that stand out are the complex and cryptic "Point of Know Return" and the elegant classic ballad "Pandora's Lullaby." Gold's voice is still one of the best in the business, used on what is -by the band's high standards- a rather mediocre album.

Dreamscapes is a limited edition eight-CD set of rare Alphaville recordings, released in 1999. It features 124 tracks with a total playing time of around 9.5 hours. 43 of the songs had never been available before, and all of the remainder had been remixed.

The four double CDs were packaged in a large (A4-sized) box, and accompanied by a large 64-page booklet, containing lyrics, rare photographs and original short fiction. A promotional copy called "Visions of Dreamscapes" was released to accompany the album.
