Devil Doll albums are difficult to review because they are so formulaic: contrasting sparse passages of Mr. Doctor's bizarre vocalizations against louder, fuller, and more traditionally progressive passages.

The latter passages, on this album at least, are nearly all symphonic in nature, with lots of guitar and keys backed by a steady rhythm on the drums. There are a couple exceptions, with one burning passage that has more in common with metal than symphonic rock. In general, the instrumental parts are all very well done, with a lot of piano, violin and cello lending the whole thing a somewhat orchestral feel.

The album has a concept about a man lying in his own funeral and thinking back on his life. The whole piece is very interesting, amusing and theatrical all the way through.

The unusual and unpredictable music of Devil Doll is an elaborate tapestry of styles, a surreal exploration of the unknown territory that is the ‘theatre of the mind’. Intense and dramatic, the Devil Doll experience spans the broad spectrum of music and emotions. Essential music for your expanding brain.
