Vivaldi - Nisi Dominus & Stabat Mater
Vivaldi, Spinosi, Lemieux, Jaroussky: four names inextricably linked in music-lovers’ minds ever since a certain Orlando furioso created a furore in concert halls across Europe in 2003. After Orlando, La fida ninfa, and the many concerts the three artists have given together, this recording of the two most famous sacred works of the Prete Rosso was an obvious and unquestioned next step. This Stabat Mater is the earliest known of Vivaldi's sacred vocal works; it was first performed in 1712, a year after the publication of his "L'estro armonico" collection of violin concertos. This medieval Latin poem describing Christ's mother at the foot of the cross has been set many times over the centuries, and in fact Vivaldi only uses half of the verses, leaving out most of the "let me feel your pain" sections - thus it's a far more dramatic than reflective work. The music for the first 4 verses is essentially repeated for the next four, but with a darker hue; this is followed by 2 more verses of a more optimistic nature, and an Amen. Marie-Nicole Lemieux seems perfect as the soloist, with a contralto voice that sounds appropriately motherly, becoming impassioned as needed but also singing the dark, low notes in a way that strikes the heart. In the liner notes conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi remarks on how she makes the music sound like a lullaby. The Nisi Dominus is less immediately dramatic in terms of subject matter and can be considered more of a showpiece. The showman is Philippe Jaroussky, who needs no introduction. His voice is smooth and feminine, and just doesn't sound like falsetto. It's a magnificent sound. As played and sung here, this is one of the most gorgeous pieces of music you'll hear. What you might call the encore piece is in between the other two; the Crucifixus movement from a Credo that might not be by Vivaldi. It's an opportunity for Jaroussky and Lemieux to sing together. Two great baroque singers on top form, backed wonderfully. The name of Jaroussky is enough of a recommendation but Lemieux's Stabat mater is another great reason to listen to it. Philippe Jaroussky - Heroes: Vivaldi Opera Arias
Philippe Jaroussky’s 2006 recital disc, a compendium of some of Vivaldi’s most beautiful opera arias for the alto and soprano voice presents a comprehensive sample of nearly 3 decades of Vivaldi’s operatic activity and explores many different aspects of a fascinating opus that is still largely unknown. The majority of these opera arias were written for famous castrati of Vivaldi’s time: Giovanni Battista Minelli, Andrea Pacini, Francesco Natali, Giovanni Ossi… to mention but a few. The disc brings together the “sublime and the tender” alternating virtuoso arie di furore e di tempesta with enchanting and poignant melodies each nurtured by Philippe Jaroussky’s intense dramatic qualities. Since Cecilia Bartoli’s Vivaldi album, no one has dared record this repertoire: Philippe Jaroussky takes up the challenge. Philippe Jaroussky is accompanied by award-winning Baroque conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi, and his ensemble Matheus, with whom Philippe often performs. The repertoire allows Jaroussky to demonstrate his dramatic qualities, which are sure to leave listeners stunned. "The purity of his high notes, the fluidity of the legato and his natural emotion will move you to tears" the Nouvel Observateur wrote. The vital humanity of Vivaldi's dramatic workslives on, in all its intensity, in this formidable recording. Tracklist: 1. Orlando finto pazzo - Se in ogni guardo (Argillano) 2. Giustino - Vedrò con mio diletto (Anastasio) 3. Ottone in villa - Frema pur, si lagni Roma (Ottone) 4. L'Olimpiade - Mentre dormi amor fomenti (Licida) 5. Philippe Jaroussky - Vivaldi: Virtuoso Cantatas
Forty of Vivaldi’s chamber cantatas survive - short, dramatic works for solo voice and continuo on the conventional theme of unhappy love, written to order for an aristocratic audience. In the five examples heard here Vivaldi rises above the strict limitations of the genre to produce virtuoso works remarkable for their melodic richness, rhythmic exuberance and dramatic power. The young French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky includes two of Vivaldi’s equally individual opera arias - the first from Orlando furioso; the second, with cello accompaniment, from Tito Manlio; while the members of Ensemble Artaserse provide instrumental interludes in the form of a short prelude for theorbo and the splendid cello sonata, RV 47. While the music of the glorious Venetian Antonio Vivaldi is well known, especially the standard repertoire `The Four Seasons' and the choral works and chamber works - even some operas - the cantatas are rarely performed and this CD of his best ones should change that. Philippe Jaroussky is yet another fine countertenor who is rather recent on the scene. With the growing popularity of musicians courageous and gifted enough to become successful in the countertenor repertoire , the numerous pieces for this range of voice continue to appear. Vivaldi's cantatas are refined, beautifully embellished, demanding consummate artistry of not only the high hurdles for the voice but also for the accompanying forces. Jaroussky seems to have endless breath, singing the long extended lines with total ease. His embellishments alter with each da capo as to the period born. This is a voice, a great power and warmth and one that feels married to the texts. Providing brilliant collaboration is the Ensemble Artaserse and period instruments. The variety of color is awe-inspiring and the technique of these unique musicians is impeccable. In their solo portions they produce a richly elegant, Venetian sound. And in tandem with Jaroussky the complete effect is one of single purpose, line, and harmony. Tracklist: Cantatas for contralto and basso continuo Alla caccia dell'alme e de' cori (RV670) 1. I. Vivaldi ARIE RITROVATE
This new release in Naïve’s acclaimed Vivaldi Edition is dedicated to forgotten opera arias. Some of these arias were lost in the 18th century and have been found in manuscripts from Vivaldi’s personal collection held in Turin. This includes two arias from Scanderbeg, an opera composed by Vivaldi in 1718. The opera itself has been lost and the pieces featured on this new CD are the only ones that remain from this work. The second part of the disc is made up of arias that are well-known but are performed here in different versions. They are taken from “Orlando furioso”, “Tito Manlio” and “La Verità in Cimento”. The release also includes two string concertos which feature the outstanding violinist Stefano Montanari who has himself appeared with great success on previous recordings in the Vivaldi Edition. The Accademia Bizantina, an orchestra specialising in 17th and 18th century repertoire played on original instruments, has been directed by the harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone since 1996. In that time the group has risen to become one of the most highly regarded period orchestras today, bringing fresh energy and creativity to the interpretation of Baroque music. Contralto Sonia Prina is a highly regarded interpreter of early opera and has in recent years been Clarice in Rossini’s La pietra di paragone at the Théâtre du Châtelet, and performed the title role in Handel’s Rinaldo at La Scala Milan under the direction of Ottavio Dantone. Vivaldi and others ANDROMEDA LIBERATA
With the recording of Andromeda liberata – their debut on Archiv Produktion – Andrea Marcon and the Venice Baroque Orchestra have scored a real coup. This is a newly rediscovered, full concert-length work that languished in obscurity for some 275 years. Usually it’s in attics, boxrooms or junkrooms that sensational finds like this one are made. But in the case of Andromeda liberata it was the venerable archive of the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice where, in April 2002, the French musicologist Olivier Fourés happened upon the manuscript of an anonymous, early 18thcentury serenata. When a discovery of the magnitude of Andromeda liberata takes place, the reaction is rather like a volcanic eruption. Regarding the work’s authorship, the scholarly world is, at least for the time being, divided in its opinion. Fourés has been able to prove beyond doubt that the aria “Sovvente il sole” was written by Antonio Vivaldi and, on the basis of various indications, he has suggested the possibility that the entire work may have been composed by Vivaldi. Nevertheless there is mounting evidence that points to a composite score, a “pasticcio”, bringing together pieces by different composers. The renowned Vivaldi specialist Michael Talbot has found unmistakable signs that some of Vivaldi’s leading Italian contemporaries – for example, Giovanni Porta and Tomaso Albinoni – were involved in the composition. The pasticcio was a popular form in Baroque music, and an extraordinarily practical one, because it allowed already existing musical pieces to be recycled by assembling them in newcombinations. As for the question, “Was it Vivaldi or not?”, the Venice Baroque Orchestra has followed that debate only insofar as it serves the interests of their thrilling recording, about to be issued on Archiv Produktion. Andrea Marcon, the orchestra’s founder and director, considers Vivaldi’s authorship to be entirely plausible, but his and his musicians’ overriding concern has been that of making this exciting, sparkling score accessible to a wider audience. The Baroque sound world here finds ideally sympathetic exponents: the Venice Baroque Orchestra is made up of outstanding instrumentalists who have specialized in the interpretation of early music. After hearing them in concert one London critic declared that it was like hearing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for the very first time. Now, in this recording, posterity actually will be hearing Andromeda liberata for the very first time in over 275 years. Daniel Hope VIVALDI
The multiple impulses behind the creation of this recording stem from the circumstances of Daniel Hope’s career. As a teenager he often played the D minor Concerto Grosso RV 565 with his mentor Yehudi Menuhin. But the immediate spur has been Hope’s collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, most recently in their recording of Mendelssohn, but even more significantly in Bach’s violin concerti and the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto. “That was my first experience of recording Baroque music,” he says. “Working with COE was inspirational: it changed my whole perception of what one could do with this music. I hadn’t realized how far I could go in terms of improvisation and ornamentation – or how rich the sound could still be when playing with such a small ensemble.” Daniel Hope has lived with Vivaldi since his earliest years, “because of the ridiculous but still prevalent notion that his music is easy to play. The A minor concerto from L’estro armonico is given to many children as soon as they’ve learned how to hold the bow – it was my first Suzuki method piece when I was about five or six. Yet Vivaldi composed more spectacularly for the violin than anyone else in his time. The brilliance and originality of his writing is breathtaking, pushing the instrument to the limits – he himself was known for embroidering his cadenzas, using high positions on the fingerboard, working at extraordinary speeds.” These qualities – together with the emotional subtlety of the music – are what Hope is celebrating with this disc, highlighting the various ways in which Vivaldi uses the violin as an expressive tool, “on its own, in a concerto, in chamber music, or as a counterbalance to the human voice, as in the aria ‘Sovvente il sole’, which has an interesting history.” Indeed it has. Until its recent rediscovery, the work of which it forms a part – Andromeda liberata – had lain forgotten in the archives. This “serenata” – across between cantata and opera, designed for open-air performance – was composed in 1726 in honour of the music-loving Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni’s return to his native Venice. Only “Sovvente il sole” can be definitively attributed to Vivaldi, who probably played its elaborate violin obbligato. The aria would originally have been sung by a countertenor, but Daniel Hope wanted to record it with the mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. “As soon as I heard this aria, I fell in love with it,” he says. “And I could imagine exactly how she would sing it. I was also keen to remind people of the expressive beauty of Vivaldi’s operatic music, as he is still known to many only as a composer of concerti.” (Michael Church) Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) Violin Concerto in D, R.234 "L'inquietudine" 1) 1.
